Why did you become a GM Maths Ambassador?

We wanted to create the GM Maths Ambassador Network to build a legacy of the Multiply Provider Support Programme. Having a community of practitioners and FE provider staff across GM, allows for best practice to be shared, solutions to challenges found and the conversation about maths to continue.

What is your favourite thing about Maths?

As someone who struggled with Maths in school, I think realising that it wasn’t just me! And that just because you may initally struggle with Maths, it doesn’t always have to be that way!

Why did you become a GM Maths Ambassador?

I love teaching maths; I’ve done it for over 20 years and have no plans to stop.  But the reform of maths has seen my learners struggle even more, particularly with the Problem-Solving elements, and to get my learners to pass a level 1 now seems more challenging than it ever did!  I’ve changed my lessons to incorporate the new specifications, with a strong focus on making the lessons vocationally relevant and am continually trying out new ways of delivery and linking lessons to ‘real-life’ but it’s extremely challenging.  Like many others’ experience I’m sure, my learners struggle with area, perimeter and volume as they either mix up the methods or forget them altogether.  The number of different question types for percentages and ratio also causes a problem. I jumped at the chance to join the GMLPN and to become a Maths Ambassador, not only is it a great opportunity to meet others and share ideas but also to learn new things that might help in my delivery of maths.  I also want to add that over the years not many courses have been run that have been relevant to my role, so it was a no-brainer for me to join this.  Thank you to everyone involved in making maths the priority it needs to be.  For anyone not yet signed up to the programme, what are you waiting for?!

What is your favourite thing about Maths?

My favourite topic to teach is ratio, particularly calculating ratio when given a total value as learners can check their own answers.  In general, though, I think maths is empowering and it’s given me confidence and provided opportunities for my personal life and career.  I am a lifelong learner and love nothing better than doing the latest practice exam as soon as it’s ‘hot off the press’ and I do find that there is always something new to learn which keeps things exciting.

Get involved!
