Audience:

This activity can be used for groups and individuals at all levels.  Lower levels are likely to struggle on an individual basis. The positional cards should only be needed for lower levels of ability.

Purpose:

Sort the cards into the order that the cars finished the race.

There are two versions to this activity.

Version 1: Can be given to any group of mixed ability as long as they are able to read and understand the information shown on the text cards within a group or for the individual.  The images help to make the activity more visual and are used to make assessments and final decisions to arrive at a solution.  The positional cards support lower levels of ability and help with ordering and sequencing; these cards are also useful for learners who are not confident with positional terminology and ESOL learners.

Version 2: Has no images and cards that contain irrelevant information.  This version is suitable for higher level learners, level 2 and maybe some level 1. Due to the ability to understand more complex information, make more complex choices and there are no images to help with the decision process.  The solution to version 2 could also be used in a similar manner to version 1, but to ensure the full decision making cards for the 4 irrelevant statements would still be needed.

Value:

This activity works on: understanding positional language (e.g. first, behind, in front), sequencing, decision making and problem solving.

If used in a group setting it also involves discussion, agreement and collaboration, as well as collective decision making.
